July 2009 - Cleveland Cultural Gardens

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are located  on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio, along Martin Luther King (MLK) Boulevard and East Boulevard. MLK Boulevard was previously called Liberty Boulevard and was renamed in 1988. The first garden dates back to 1916.

African
American Garden
– dedicated in 1977. The African American population throughout the United States represents 47 African countries.

American Colonial Garden – 1935.

 

American Legion Peace Garden – 1936.

 

Armenian Garden (proposed). Armenia is located in Southwest Asia, bordering Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and Georgia. The terrain of Armenia is mountainous, with peaks over 10,000 feet. The capital is Yerevan.

 

Azerbaijan Garden – dedicated on May 12, 2009. Azerbaijan is located in Southwest Asia, bordering Russia, Georgia, Iran, Armenia, and the Caspian Sea. The Great Caucasus Mountains are located along segments of the perimeter of Azerbaijan. The capital is Baku.

British
Garden (originally the Shakespear Garden – dedicated 1916).  The British are also known as Britons or the people of Britain. Great Britain is the island located to the northwest of continental Europe, made up of England, Wales and Scotland. The Pennines mountains stretch throughout much of the island. The waters surrounding the island include the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean.

 

Chinese Garden – established 1985. China is located on the mainland of Eastern Asia. The Yellow Sea, East China Sea, Taiwan Straight, and South China Sea are located on the east coast of China. Beijing is the capital.

Croatian Garden (proposed). Croatia is located in southeast Europe. Bordering countries include Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. The capital is Zagreb.

Czech
Garden
– dedicated 1935. The Czech Republic is located in east central Europe, neighbored by Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. The capital is Prague.

Estonian Garden – 1966. Estonia is located in Europe on the Baltic Sea, north of Latvia and west of Russia. The Gulf of Finland is located to the north, the Gulf of Riga is located to the southwest, and Lakes Peipus and Pskov are located to the east. The capital is Tallinn.

Finnish Garden – dedicated 1958. Finland is located in Northern Europe, bordered by Russia, Sweden, and Norway. The Gulf of Finland is located to the south, and the Gulf of Bothnia is located to the west. There are thousands of lakes throughout the country. The capital is Helsinki.

German Garden – 1929. Germany is located in central Europe, bordered by Poland, The Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Denmark. The North Sea and The Baltic Sea are located on segments of the northern coast. The capital is Berlin.

Greek
Garden
– dedicated on June 02, 1940. Greece is located in southeast Europe, bordered by Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. The capital is Athens.

Hebrew Garden – dedicated 1926. The Hebrews are an ancient people of the Levant region, defined as descendants of the prophet Heber. The Levant is the geographical region bordering the Mediterranean Sea, located between Egypt and Turkey. The present day countries located in this region include Israel, Lebanon, and Syria. The capital cities are Jerusalem, Beirut, and Damascus.

Hungarian Garden – dedicated 1938. Hungary is located in central Europe, bordered by The Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Austria, and Slovakia. The capital is Budapest.

India Garden – dedicated 2005. India is located in central Asia, bordered by the countries of Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. The Himalayas stretch across parts of northern India, and the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea are located on the east and west southern coastlines. The capital is Delhi.

Irish Garden – dedicated 1939. Ireland is on an island located in the Atlantic Ocean, bordered by Northern Ireland (United Kingdom), with the Irish Sea located on the east coast. Dublin is the capital.

Italian Garden – opened October 12, 1930. Italy is located in southern Europe, and is bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino, and Vatican City. To the east, south, and west, Italy’s coast is bordered by the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the Ligurian Sea. The capital is Rome.

Latvian Garden – October 08, 2006. Latvia is located in Europe on the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga. Bordering countries include Estonia, Russia, Belarus, and Lithuania. The capital is Riga.

Lithuanian Garden – October 1936. Lithuania is located in Europe on the Baltic Sea. Bordering countries include Latvia, Belarus, Poland, and Russia. The capital is Vilnius.

Polish Garden – dedicated 1934. Poland is located on the Baltic Sea in central Europe. Bordering countries include Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. The Carpathian Mountains are located to the south. Warsaw is the capital of Poland.

Romanian Garden – inaugurated in 1967. Romania is located in southeastern Europe on the Black Sea. Bordering countries include Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and The Ukraine. The capital is Bucharest.

Rusin Garden – dedicated 1939. Rusins are an Eastern Slavic ethnic group that speak Rusin. The majority of Rusins were originally located along the "northern and southern slopes of the Carpathian Mountains" (Source: Carpatho-Rusyn Society brochure, 2010).

Scottish Garden (proposed). Scotland is a country located in Great Britain, north of Wales and England. The capital is Edinburgh.

 

Serbian Garden – dedicated on October 05, 2008. Serbia is located in southeast Europe, with part of the southwest perimeter located on the Adriatic Sea. Bordering countries include Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Herzegovina, Croatia, and Hungary. The capital is Belgrade.

Slovak Garden – dedicated 1932. Slovakia is a country located in central Europe. The Carpathian Mountains spread throughout much of the country. Bordering neighbors include Poland, The Ukraine, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The capital is Bratislava.
 

Slovenian Garden – dedicated May 1938. Slovenia is located in Europe on the Gulf of Trieste to the north of the Adriatic Sea. Bordering countries include Hungary, Croatia, Italy, and Austria. The capital is Ljubljana.

Syrian Garden (proposed). Syria is a country located in The Middle East on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Bordering countries include Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, and Turkey.  The capital is Damascus.

 

Ukrainian Garden – inaugurated in 1940. The Ukraine is located in eastern Europe on the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Bordering countries include Russia, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Belarus. The capital is Kiev.
